About us
Sporting Start was set up by Ex-professional Rugby player Chris Irwin. As well as playing for Wigan Warriors, Leigh Centurions, Oldham Roughyeds and Swinton Lions, Chris also represented Great Britain at school boy and under 19’s level. After retiring from professional sport Chris went into teaching and has taught PE and coached sport in schools (4 - 16) and sixth form colleges (14 - 19).
With rising levels of obesity and lack of sport played by children, Sporting Start was set up to encourage young people to lead more active and healthy lifestyles across Greater Manchester and the surrounding areas. Sporting start are also very aware of recent government initiatives and targets and aims to support schools in achieving these targets by delivering quality P.E. lessons as part of the curriculum (as well as covering teachers PPA hours) and by offering after school sports provision.
To ensure the quality of sessions are kept to an extremely high standard Sporting Start ensures all coaches are qualified teachers and or qualified coaches in their chosen sport with experience of working in the educational environment. All coaches are also CRB checked and cleared.
